Have you had a look at crime statistics in the United States? In 2009, the total population in the United States was 307,006,550. The total crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants was 3,465.5. That is a frightening total of 10,639,369 crimes in 2009! [1]
Let’s break it down further:
- Violent Crimes – 1,318,398
- Property Crimes – 9,320,971
- Murders – 15,241
- Forcible rape – 89,000
- Robbery – 408,217
- Aggravated assault – 806,843
- Burglary – 2,196,971
- Larceny/Theft – 6,327,320
- Vehicle Theft – 794,616
Last year there were over 6 million people in prison, jail, on probation or on parole in the United States. Unfortunately, a large number of crimes are committed by repeat offenders.
Criminal Records Check
Due to these staggering statistics, criminal history checks are being performed in far greater numbers than ever before. There are many reasons why you may need to perform a criminal records check. It should be a serious consideration if you have any doubts about someone’s past.
If you own a business or own rental property, it is hard not to rationalize why you should run a criminal records check. You certainly want to know if your prospective employee or tenant is on parole, on the FBI’s most wanted list, has been convicted of a serious crime or is perhaps even a terrorist.
People are what can make or break your business. It can mean a matter of prosperity or disaster. Are you aware that your company could be held liable if your employee commits a crime while on the job? This is true if the employee has a criminal record and you neglected to check their criminal record before hiring him or her.
Perhaps you don’t own a business or rental properties. Why would you need to run a criminal background check? You want to protect your family, your home and your belongings. There are other situations in which you should seriously consider running a criminal records check such as screening a nanny, babysitter, private tutor or anyone who will interact with your children. And, what about checking your own criminal history to ensure there are no discrepancies before you apply for a job or fill out a loan or rental application?
How to Run a Criminal Records Check
Criminal background checks are more affordable than ever and you can easily do it yourself in a matter of seconds. You want to select a reliable service with consistently updated records. We recommend Net Detective. Net Detective’s database contains billions of criminal records. Once you purchase the service, you will log in and begin your criminal records searches. You only need the name and state, and the criminal records are pulled up within seconds!

The average Facebook user has approximately 200 Facebook friends. One recent study showed that only 22 percent of the friends list is comprised of people we know fairly
well. [1]
22% people from high school
12% extended family
10% coworkers
9% college friends
8% immediate family
7% people from voluntary groups
2% neighbors
That leaves an astounding 30 percent who cannot be classified as someone you know well. Perhaps the person is a friend of a friend or someone you don’t know at all.
Another study produced even more astounding results. It showed that the average Facebook user only knows 20 percent of the people they are friends with. [2] That means only one-fifth of your Facebook friends are real friends! The rest of your friends are probably acquaintances you barely know and possibly people you do not know at all!
The Hidden Dangers
The foremost question is why do Facebook users supersize their list of friends? The most cited reasons are politeness and the desire to appear more popular. [2] However, there are some real dangers in expanding your friend list to include people you don’t know. The most obvious reason is that you could be exposing yourself to malware, spam, viruses and fraud.
There is a lesser known danger that is very real and very frightening. You may be inviting a known criminal into your life. Do you really want someone with a criminal record as your friend on Facebook? If you are like the majority of Facebook users, you post detailed information about your daily activities. Are you leaving your home and your family vulnerable? What if one of those unknown friends has a record of breaking and entering or burglary? Worse yet, what if one of your Facebook friends is a sexual predator? Do you want him or her to see photos of your children, or to know their activities?
Protect Yourself
Of course, you could go through and start “unfriending” everyone you don’t know on Facebook. Although, it would be time consuming and you may eliminate the wrong people. We do encourage you to do a little bit of housekeeping. But what if someone you think is safe – a friend of a friend or an acquaintance – has a criminal record? How do you know for sure who is safe and who isn’t?
There is a simple, automated program that can help you in weeding out the good from the bad. FriendChecker works just like anti-virus software. Instead of checking your PC for problems, it will check your Facebook friend list for problems! This unique system checks your Facebook friend list against the millions of criminal records in the United States and you will receive a detailed report.
Are you worried that your “friends” will find out that you are checking up on them? The FriendChecker system is anonymous so no one will know that you are checking. What if your list of friends changes or a friend’s background changes? FriendChecker provides continued surveillance of your Facebook friend list and will update you if there are any changes.
For a low monthly fee that can be cancelled at any time, you can have peace of mind knowing who your friends are on Facebook.

Have you ever wondered what your personal background check looks like? There is an easy way to find out. Running a background check on yourself is a great way to learn what your official record looks like. Other than satisfying your curiosity, why run a personal background check? There are a number of great reasons including learning what prospective employers see when they check your background and correcting any errors that appear on your records.
Background checks can include everything from credit history, criminal records, and even the social networks you use. A derogatory entry could cause you to miss out on a great job or be rejected by a home or apartment rental agent. And, negative entries on your credit report could cause you to be rejected by a potential lender or creditor.
Background Check Errors
It is unfortunate but errors can occur in background checks. For example, people with common names can be mistaken for someone else. It is possible that public and private records can contain outdated information. Think about this; a simple human error could cause someone to lose their job or perhaps go through a financial calamity while they try to clear their names. It certainly would be better for you to clean up any errors before a crisis occurs.
Since you know all of your past and present personal details, obtaining a complete background check on yourself can be accomplished rather easily. We recommend starting your search with Net Detective.
How to Correct Errors
Once you have your background check, it is imperative to verify all of the reported information very carefully. If you find any errors, don’t waste a moment of time in using our tips for getting the errors corrected.
Criminal Record Errors – Check your criminal record for errors. Ensure that the charges, names, dates and dispositions are correct. Many mistakes can be corrected without court involvement. Contact the clerk’s office in the jurisdiction where the matter was handled. If they cannot rectify the error, you will be referred to the prosecutor’s office. If a charge is appearing in which you were found not guilty, file to have the charges expunged from your record. The courthouse will provide the necessary paperwork.
DMV Record Errors – Call the Department of Motor Vehicles office in question. Request a copy of your driving record. Compare the official record to the record found in your background check. If the error is related to a criminal offense such as a DUI, contact the clerk of court’s office where the incident occurred. They can advise you on how to correct the error.
Credit Report Errors – Contact each of the credit reporting agencies you believe has an error on their report. You have a right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) to receive a copy of your credit report from any agency that provided information about you. Once you have the credit report in hand, contact each credit agency to dispute the inaccurate information provided.
Miscellaneous Public Records Errors – You may discover errors pertaining to taxes, judgments, liens, birth and death records, marriage records, real estate transactions and small claims. In these cases, you must contact the appropriate public agency to have the record corrected.
Remember, it’s important for you to know what is on your personal background check and verify the accuracy of the information. It can make the difference between landing a job, buying or renting a home, getting credit or a loan, or completely losing out.

And if there is one thing I’ve learned it’s that you can’t always believe what companies claim on their sites. It’s ridiculous and I’m frustrated to be honest with you. That’s really one of the reasons why I made this site.
There are many reasons why people need to do an arrest records search online. I’m a protective parent, and let me tell you I don’t want some criminal or sex offender anywhere near my baby! There are a lot of crazy things that can and do happen out there these days. I’m sure you’ve heard of the unbelievable Jaycee Lee Dugard abduction!?
Protect Your Family!
Arrest records searches are incredibly beneficial for your family. Here’s why. We recently moved from another state, which means we had to start all over… with everything. From choosing babysitters, to picking a day care, hiring a decent plumber, even hiring a financial adviser to help us save up for a future home purchase. I also work from home, so from time to time I need to hire assistants. Searching background checks are very helpful, and I don’t want to see any warrant for an arrest show up on someone sitting right next to me! I’m sure you can think of a thousand other reasons to run criminal checks: maybe you’re a landlord; an employer; or you’re scanning the neighborhood for Sex Offenders. Yikes!!

So, I’m A Cheapskate…
I tried to do the Cheap/Free approach at first. It’s kind of funny actually to think of how much time I wasted. Well, not really!?! So picture this…here I am doing searches on Google for this guy I want to hire temporarily. Is he okay? Normal? Is there an arrest history there? Then, I think I found him on a criminal search site that claimed to be up to date and thorough. I click on the link, enter my search, and it’s another search box wanting me to search for him again. So I do, and then they want me to make a purchase before I see anything. So, I keep looking and finally figured out that I’m not going to find zilch until I purchase one of these things. I went through about 5 of these sites before I finally found the data. THEN… having just paid for 5 services, I start going through my list to get a refund, which raises another question: Do these companies even know what in the world customer service is???? I know this all sounds crazy, but I put in the time so you don’t have to. I write about these things to help you: mothers, fathers, potential neighbors, friends, loved ones, etc.
And The Winner Is…(Drumroll please)
Anyway, that was a debacle and I learned the hard way. But, the site I found the data on was Net Detective. I was actually surprised because it was a fair price according to the other sites out there. I got unlimited arrest records and criminal searches, plus sex offender searches with maps, mug shots, and conviction dates. I also got comprehensive background check searches and other public records information, ALL UNLIMITED!! Which, by the way, helps a lot because some of those guys charge you up front then want to charge you every time you search. Sheesh!
One of the other things I thought was really cool with Net Detective was that they gave me a phone number to call if I had trouble. So, when I couldn’t find this one person I was looking for info on, and wanted to see if there was a better way, I called them. They got on the phone and helped me find that person right away. I later found out this is called “Assisted Search” which other companies charge for. With Net Detective, it was totally free! Is that cool or what?
