How do you really know whom you are inviting into your house…
I stayed home with our newborn for three months. My husband and I always planned for me to go back to work, but when it came to finding a nanny we didn’t really know what to do. Of course, we asked all our friends for recommendations, but nothing worked out. We needed to find a nanny or a babysitter some other way and it started to scare us. How do you really know whom you are inviting into your house to care for your child?
We decided to look on Craigslist. I know what you are thinking, but we have had great luck with Craigslist in the past so we put up an ad looking for an experienced nanny with references. We were specific in the ad with what we wanted as far as days, hours, responsibilities, etc. We got a bunch of responses and chose the best candidates to have in-person interviews. Well, some of the stories from the interviews are worth their own blog posts! There are some strange people out there.
We found a young girl, let’s call her Tammy, and wanted to offer her the job. We called Tammy’s references and they checked out fine. We still felt like we needed to know more about this babysitter/nanny who is going to care for our newborn daughter four days a week. We needed to find a safe and anonymous background check for nannies. So, we hit the Internet for companies that do babysitter screening and background checks.
The web has a ton of sites that claim to offer free background checks…which one to use?
The web has a ton of sites that claim to offer free background checks for anyone you are searching for. However, once you actually start clicking around those sites, you will find that there are tons of hidden fees. We were looking for a site that could provide easy screening checks for babysitters, nannies, au pairs, etc. Something that is easy-to-use and reasonably priced. Background checks can get very expensive if you don’t pay attention to what you are doing.
We searched dozens of sites and forums for recommendations. All of our information led us to NetDetective.net. We found easy and unlimited access to background checks for the very fair price of $2.95. We used NetDetective.com to confirm her current address, previous addresses, phone numbers and more. Doing a nanny background screen with an independent third party is an absolute necessity to make sure you and your family are safe. It seems a little shady, almost like spying on someone. However, it’s completely anonymous, and $2.95 is a small price to pay for the peace of mind.

How did it turn out? Well, Tammy lasted about six weeks. We liked her well enough, but she took another job where she could work five days a week instead of four. We went through the process again and found someone else, let’s call her Beth, whom we really adore. Beth has become a part of our family and our daughter is so excited to see her each day! Yes, we used NetDetective.com again to do another babysitter background check and everything came up perfectly. There were no red flags. Please do yourself a favor before you hire anyone to work in your home or be around your children. Do a babysitter background screen and make sure they are who they say they are. NetDetective.net is the best $2.95 I’ve spent in years.

“WARNING: Beware Of Online Scams!
I Can’t Believe The Money I’ve Lost On These So Called Background Check Sites……”
And if there is one thing I’ve learned it’s that you can’t always believe what companies claim on their sites. It’s ridiculous and I’m frustrated to be honest with you. That’s one of the reasons why I made this site. There are many reasons why people need background checks done. I’m a parent, and let me tell you I don’t want some sex offender or deadbeat anywhere near my child!
For The Job…
Background tools are incredibly beneficial for a company also. For instance, I work from home and have to hire people occasionally. When you work from home it’s harder to make sure people are doing their job reliably because you can’t see them. So, by searching people’s background records we can see patterns in their past that will give us a better chance of finding reliable people. If you are bringing people into your office then you definitely want to know what type of person he or she is before they become a part of your environment.
I tried to do the Cheap/Free approach at first. It’s kind of silly actually to think of how much time I wasted. (Em, not really!!) So picture this…here I am doing searches on
for a guy that I interviewed. Then, I think I found him. I click on the link and it’s another search box wanting me to search for him again. So, I do and they want me to purchase before I see anything. So, I keep looking and finally figured out that I’m not going to find zilch until I purchase one of these things. I went through about 10 of them before I finally found the data. Then, I start going through my list to get a refund. Do these companies even know what in the world customer service is????
And The Winner Is…(Drumroll please)
* Includes Free Sex Offender Map! (effective. Jan 1, 2010)
Anyway, that was a debacle and I learned the hard way. But, the site I found the data on is called “Net Detective.” I was actually surprised because it was a fair price according to the other sites out there. I got unlimited background check searches, which by the way helps a lot because some of those guys charge you up front then want to charge you every time you search. Sheesh! One of the other things I thought was really cool with Net Detective was that they gave me a phone number to call if I had trouble. So, I couldn’t find this one person I was looking for info on and wanted to see if there was a better way. Rather than telling me the better way they actually looked up the record for me. Is that cool or what?
So, thanks for listening to me ramble on… Anyways, I hope you’ll find this helpful to stay out of trouble when it comes time to do some effective background records searching online.

If there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you can’t always believe what companies claim on their sites. It’s ridiculous and I’m frustrated to be honest. That’s one of the reasons why I created this site.
Why Do People Need People Search?
Conducting people searches is incredibly beneficial for everyone. What if you’re dating online and want to see if someone’s telling the truth about their age? How ’bout screening your babysitter? Maybe you’re looking to find your old sweetheart and see if they’re married? There are many reasons why you’d want to pick up the following information on someone:
- Address (Do they really live where they claim to?)
- Phone Number (Can I actually call them?)
- Age / Date of Birth (What’s their Real Age?)
- Marital Status (Are they still single? MARRIED??)
- Estimated Income & Home Value (Do they have a job or own their own home?)
So, I’m A Cheapskate…
I tried to do the Cheap/Free approach at first. It’s kind of funny actually to think of how much time I wasted. Well, not really!?! So picture this…here I am doing a reverse phone search for this guy who just emailed me in response to a bookkeeping ad I posted. Craigslist is a great web site to find all types of things, and if you use the Internet at all, you have definitely heard of Craigslist, but just how safe is this site? The site’s executives are saying in light if past events they plan to tighten security for people who are posting ads to hopefully avoid any future issues like they have had in the past.
Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist CEO, says:
“Because we do capture identifying information, including credit card info and telephone numbers, and because we are so cooperative with law enforcement, we think that criminals are getting the message that choosing Craigslist for criminal activity is an extremely unwise choice, since you’re basically guaranteeing that you’ll be quickly caught.
“And we’ve seen that in a few unfortunate recent cases. But, to the extent that they’re not aware, we hope they’ll soon become abundantly aware that Craigslist is a very poor choice for criminal activity.”

And if there is one thing I’ve learned it’s that you can’t always believe what companies claim on their sites. It’s ridiculous and I’m frustrated to be honest with you. That’s one of the reasons why I made this site.
There are many reasons why people need to do Sex Offender searches online. I’m a protective parent, and let me tell you I don’t want some sex offender or deadbeat anywhere near my baby! There are a lot of crazy things that can and do happen out there these days. I’m sure you’ve heard of the unbelievable Jaycee Lee Dugard abduction!
For The Family…
Sex Offender searches are incredibly beneficial for your family. Here’s why. We recently moved into a new home. We picked a cute neighborhood with cafés and bookstores so we could take walks throughout the day. Since I work from home, this is an absolute must. But driving through a potential neighborhood doesn’t tell you the TRUTH about its residents. So you need to determine whether a place is safe by doing your homework–essential research online. You have to search Sex Offender Registries in your zip code.
So, I’m A Cheapskate…
I tried to do the Cheap/Free approach at first. It’s kind of funny actually to think of how much time I wasted. Well, not really!?! So picture this…here I am doing searches on Google for a neighborhood we like. Is it safe? Are there any reviews? Then, I found a Sex Offender site that claimed to be up to date and thorough. I click on the link, enter my search, and it’s another search box wanting me to search for that same zip code again. So, I do it, and then they want me to make a purchase before I see anything. So, I keep looking and finally figured out that I’m not going to find zilch until I purchase one of these things. I went through about 5 of these sites before I finally found the data. Then, having just paid for 5 services, I start going through my list to get a refund. Do these companies even know what in the world customer service is???? I know this all sounds crazy, but I put in the time so you don’t have to. I write about these things to help you: mothers, fathers, potential neighbors, friends, loved ones, etc.
And The Winner Is…(Drumroll please)
Anyway, that was a debacle and I learned the hard way. But, the site I found the data on was Net Detective. I was actually surprised because it was a fair price according to the other sites out there. I got unlimited sex offender searches with maps, mug shots, and conviction dates. Plus I got background check searches and other public records information, all unlimited searches. Which by the way helps a lot because some of those guys charge you up front then want to charge you every time you search. Sheesh! One of the other things I thought was really cool with Net Detective was that they gave me a phone number to call if I had trouble. So, when I couldn’t find this one person I was looking for info on, and wanted to see if there was a better way, I called them. They got on the phone and helped me find that person right away. I later found out this is called “Assisted Search” which other companies charge for. With Net Detective, it was totally free! Is that cool or what?

As I have mentioned elsewhere, any good mom is always thinking about her child’s safety. Before long, my child will be out riding bikes and running around the neighborhood any chance he can get. But the truth is, he may not be safe everywhere he goes! There are registered criminals out there, all around us. In fact, many State Supreme Courts rule that towns can’t ban sex offenders from living near schools and parks!
Sex Offenders? Near Us?!
Therefore everyone needs to know where these people live. Thankfully, there are resources to help you locate registered Sex Offenders in your neighborhood. With a little time in front of the computer, you can get a detailed report on registered sex offenders by zip.
How Do They Work?
To identify registered sex offenders living near you, just fill in your zip code. The following 2 sites all offer sex offender searches by zip code. While some offer more features than others, you are sure to improve the safety of your family from the very beginning.
Top Players in the Game
Enter the good guys. The following three services, each somewhat different, have been created by folks who value time, money, and safety. The world is changing for the better when it comes to respecting the safety of our families and loved ones. These groups have listened to our concerns and have responded. I think you’ll be as impressed with them as I am:
#1 Net Detective (Law Enforcement Edition)*
- > The largest database I’ve seen (1.1 billion records)
- > Search and map Sex Offenders by Zip Code
- > Full background checks and criminal records
- > Excellent customer service
- > Updated records on 90% of U.S. residents
- > 90 day satisfaction guarantee
|
|
|
Net Detective is hands down the most full-featured public records database available. Their Sex Offender data, while extremely accurate, is only the tip of the iceberg here. Additional features include background checks, address histories, reverse phone lookups, and criminal records. * Law Enforcement Edition is a paid upgrade, but let me assure you it is worth every penny.
|
#2 National Alert Registry
- > Specializes in Sex Offender whereabouts by Zip Code
- > Receive Red Alert notifications when changes to the database affect you
- > High-res interactive maps
- > Color photos of sex offenders
- > Detailed descriptions of the crimes committed
- > Free Child ID Kit
|
|
|
The National Alert Registry is hailed as one of the premier sites for educating households about the status of registered sex offenders living near their homes, schools, day-cares, and friends and relatives. While not a full-featured background and criminal records tool like Net Detective, this service doesn’t pretend to be anything it is not. The free child ID kit is worth the price alone. If you’re looking strictly for sex offender data (and the child ID kit) look no further.
|
Final Word
Both of the above services will help keep your family safe, and that is the number one priority here. While my top choice, Net Detective, is a full-service background check and public records tool, it may be a bit too deep for the light user. You can’t go wrong with any of these services and I urge you to start protecting yourself and your loved ones today. You’ll be amazed at what you find!
